Renowned for its red wine, Bordeaux also boasts an impressive annual production of nearly seven million cases of white wine. While often overshadowed by its iconic reds, Bordeaux's white wines are equally distinctive. The heart of the region's dry white production lies in the Entre-Deux-Mers sub-region, nestled between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. Here, the gravel-rich soils foster the growth of crisp, mineral-driven whites, showcasing the unique character of the Sauvignon Blanc grape.
Exceptional examples, such as those crafted by artisan winemaker Jean Marc Barthez, challenge preconceived notions of Sauvignon Blanc. Barthez, who leads a small cooperative winery in the ancient village of Monségur, sources grapes from surrounding vineyards and ferments them without oak, allowing the terroir to shine through. This Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc offers a refreshing acidity, with notes of citrus and melon, and a rich, textured body—a true reflection of the region's hallmark qualities.
Jean Marc Barthez attributes part of the wine's depth to a small addition of Sémillon, Bordeaux's "other" white grape, which adds an indescribable allure reminiscent of classic white Bordeaux. Versatile and structured, it pairs beautifully with oysters and richer seafood dishes like pan-seared trout or broiled lobster, making it a delightful choice for any occasion.
